Visible textile standards and test methods

While consumers are increasingly paying attention to safe, healthy textiles, it is even more important to emphasize the Oeko-Tex textile label that is friendly to the planet and humans. In Europe, textiles are not allowed to remain chemically toxic, and 30 companies in the US and Asia have been verified.

On the other hand, high-visibility textiles that flaunt the protection of personal safety are also receiving increasing attention from global textile manufacturers. According to the statistics of the National Reflexology Promotion Promotion Association of Japan, more than 9,000 people died in traffic accidents each year in Japan. Tens of thousands of people were injured, and nighttime accidents accounted for about 70%. The National Association for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) statistics show that nearly 100 people die and more than 20,000 are injured in highway and urban road maintenance every year. About 2,500 of the casualties were caused by low visibility or poor weather at night.

In view of the increasing demand for high-visibility textiles, internationally renowned brands including Adidas, Nike, H&M, Puma, Camel and Reebok have applied high-visibility materials to their products.

Countries around the world have also developed high-visibility clothing product standards and testing methods, especially the use of EN471:2003 and ANSI107:2004 is more common.

EN471 is the European standard for high visibility clothing product specifications. This standard indicates the performance of protective clothing, and this performance demonstrates the presence of the wearer, whether during daylight hours or at night. These requirements include the area of use of the material, color, and retroreflective materials.

Since the standard use of highly visible materials is one of the important bases for insurance compensation in Western countries, many countries use regulations as a tool for regulation or publicity.

ANSI 107 is the national standard number for high visibility safety clothing in the United States. It was completed by the committee of the Safety Equipment Association/ISEA. It was published by the American National Standards Institute (Inc./ANSI) in June 1999.

This standard specifies the functional characteristics of high visibility safety garments, the minimum ratio of background and reflective fabrics, the location of reflective fabrics, and even guidelines for testing and labeling.

Materials required for visual clothing products:

Since the fluorescent material reflects light at a longer wavelength than the absorption wavelength, this material is most commonly used as a background substrate for highly visible garments.

Retro-reflective material: The reflection of light from a material reflects light from a source back to the source.

Composite material: This material combines the characteristics of fluorescent materials and retroreflective materials.
